The HOLA Charitable Trust was founded in 2008 following a visit to Kenya by Kath and Mike Blears the previous year when they were struck by the poverty and deprivation they encountered. They returned to the UK determined to help the poor and underprivileged children, many of them orphans, they had met.
An orphanage for 20 children was built and is now under the control of a church. Later, after consultations with the Area Children’s Department in Kilifi, they were told of a desperate need for schools in some rural areas.

As a result, a large piece of land with a Swahili house at Mtwapa, near Mombasa, was purchased in 2009. The house has been renovated and converted to hold two kindergarten classes, for 20 children in each class. The future aim is to build a primary school with eight classes.
Kath and Mike, along with the other trustees, are all volunteers and pay their own expenses when they visit Kenya, and all donations go to the benefit of the children.
